Let's Try Hookah!

After writing about a surprise proposal, it feels almost impossible to find anything else to write about. So… this is a good time to lighten things up and write about my first experience at a hookah bar!

(Apologies. This picture was kidnapped from a random website.)

Not Quite Like in Sex and the City

Before this August, I didn’t know much about hookah (vesipiippu). To be honest, I just remembered this scene from the movie Sex and the City 2, placed in Abu Dhabi:

In reality, hookah bars don’t offer quite as sexy and glamorous setting. ;)

First Experience at Karma Bar

When Ari was in New York, we visited the Karma Bar & Lounge with my dear friends – Theo, Manu and LaVera. For me, this was my first hookah experience ever. (This could be seen from the poor smoke that I was able to deliver out into the air...)

According to different sources "Hookah is a device for smoking flavored tobacco. The smoke is passed through a water basin before inhalation." There are many, many flavors to choose from. Ours had a taste of apple, if I remember correctly.

Everyone received their own mouth piece. Sharing would have been fine here. However, as a singer, I could not share mine in Finland – especially during my gig season.

How was it? Relaxing, fun and not unhealthy unless you do this often. :) I could definitely try again. And I know Ari got his own hookah from his dear friends last August, so maybe I'll rehearse more with him in the summer... Right, Ari?

"Heidi, this is not singing", was the comment I received.

Manu knows his way with hookah, awesome!

...and so does Theo. :)

Ari and I. Note: a week before the engagement. :)

LaVera has become one of my closest friends from NYU.

You can read Ari's blog writing from Karma here.

  1. Our tobacco was indeed apple flavored. I would add to your post for those that haven't tried hookah that it does not feel like regular smoking at all. And it's also very social.

We'll try my hookah in the summer, I promise.
